Asian Handicap Guide

The asian handicap is the most popular form of sports betting in Asia. The main difference between the common handicap is that there are only 2 possible outcomes in the asian handicap. In sports such as football where there's a possibility to Draw, your winning chances are increased from 33% to 50%.
The amount of the handicap is calculated from the basic quotes of the match winner and it's placed on the value where both outcomes have the same chances. So the amount of the handicap in football can be from 0 to 3 with shifts of one quarter, i.e. 0.25.

Depending on the results, in some amounts of the handicap the bets are considered void and the stake is refunded entirely or partially. The only amount in football in the asian handicap, where there are no stakes refunded is the half number handicap.

ASIAN HANDICAPS BASIC AMOUNTS

Asian Handicap 0

It's applied when the chances of both teams are equal so none of the opponents are favored with the handicap. According to this handicap a Draw is not an option and, in case of such result, the bet is considered void and your betting money is returned. Due to that, some bookmakers, especially the english ones call this handicap DRAW NO BET.

Playing this handicap you eliminate the possibility of cancelled bets due to a Draw wich is a good alternative to the ordinary bets on the winner when you doubt the chances of the team you would like to bet on. In Pinnacle and some other bookmakers this handicap is denominated as pk (pick).

Asian Handicap 0.5

This is the most popular and the most favored form of asian handicap beneath the betting pubblic. Considering that there are only two possible outcomes, this is withal the simplest form of asian handicap. In order for the bet to be winning the favoured team must win the match, and the odds are equal to the odds on the winning  as are on the common bets. The weaker team is starting with a half goal advantage and for a winning bet they must not lose the match.
The handicap +0.5 is in fact the same as a double chance bet (x1 or x2 ) but very often the odds offered on the asian handicap +0.5 are much better than the odds offered by double chances wich makes this handicap a very appealing form of betting, especially at bookmakers specialized in asian handicap. Therefore, the handicap -0.5 is in fact a bet on the favorite where the odds on the win in asian handicap are often better than the common ones. An example of this case shows on the image below:

asian handicap odds

If you are betting on the offer of 1x2 the odds on Bari are 1.67 (marked with the colour red) while the odds on the handicap -0.5 amounts 1.72 (marked with the colour green). In both cases the Bari team must win in order to make the bet pass, i.e. it's practically the same bet.

Asian Handicap 1

With this handicap, if you are betting on your favorite ( handicap -1 ) it has to win with at least 2 goals spread. This handicap appears only if one of the teams is a rather convincing favorite, with the odds to win of about 1.5 on the common bets. In case of a win with only one goal spread the bet is considered void and your stake is returned. Therefore, this handicap is worth playing in case you are convinced of your choice but you want to achieve better quotes. On the other hand, if you bet on the weaker team and the match is lost with one goal spread, your stake is refunded, decreasing your chances of losing your bet.

Double Asian Handicap ( Quarter-Goal Handicap )

Quarter-Goal Handicaps ( 0.25, 0.75, 1.25,...) are in fact double or splitted handicaps and are often refered as such by the bookmakers offers. The handicap 0.25 is equal to the handicap 0 - 0.5 ( or 0 and 0.5 ) and your stake is equally distributed on the handicaps 0 and 0.5. In other words, half the amount of your bet is placed on handicap 0 and the other half on handicap 0.5. Winning and losing possibilities of the bet in Quarter-Goal handicaps are different as they depend  on the final scoreline of the match.

Asian Handicap 0.25 ( 0 - 0.5 )

Usually occurs when one team is a mild favorite and playing this handicap  lowers your eventual loss in case the favorite plays Draw. If you bet on the weaker team and they win, you win the bet and, in case of a Draw, you gain asset on half of the stake while the other half is refunded.
Depending on the origin of the bookmakers, there are several ways this handicap is denominated: in europeans is usually 0.25, asians apply 0/0.5 or 0-0.5, while english ones use fractions i.e. they denote it with 1/4. Pinnacle bookmakers mark it as pk and 0.5.

Asian Handicap 0.75 ( 0.5 - 1 )

Half of the stake is deposited on handicap 0.5 and the other half on handicap 1. In this handicap your favorite must win with 2 or more goals of advantage to make the bet refundable completely while partial refund is achieved in case of a win with 1 goal spread. If you bet on the weaker team and the match is lost with 1 goal spread, half the stake is returned while the other half is lost. In case of a Draw or win, the bet on the weaker team is a winning bet. As in the previous case, this handicap can be denoted in several ways: 0.5 / 1 or 0.5 - 1 in asian and some european bookmakers, 3/4 in english ones and  0.5 and 1 in Pinnacles.
